data governance + data management + data visualization

¡Hola! Thank you for visiting my site.

I am a Puerto Rican Data Governance Specialist and Visualization Developer with over seven years of experience in data quality, security, analysis, and visualization development. I've worked as Senior Data Visualization Specialist for Moody's, ET Consultant for the World Bank, Data Journalist for New America, Data Journalism Fellow for the Committee to Protect Journalists, among other key roles in the data governance and data viz industry.

As a Data Projects Consultant for the Gender Data Team of the World Bank Group, I belonged to a team of five talented and ambitious women professionals in charge of remodeling and redesigning an essential statistical knowledge hub. Five months before finishing my year contract, I produced the requested data narratives to execute a successful revamping of the Gender Data Portal as part of the year-long World Bank #AccelerateEquality campaign.

As a team player, I always aim to set realistic goals and delegate tasks efficiently.  In all my job experiences, we've reached our targets and increased the companies/organizations' worldwide engagement.  I lead meetings and workshops with stakeholders to refocus resources and channel efforts leading to research on diverse areas.

Being the Patti Birch Fellow for Data Journalism at the Committee to Protect Journalists (2019-2020) prepared me to develop internal strategies and practical guides to handle the entity's data.

Previously, in the summer of 2019, I worked as data journalism intern for the Open Technology Institute of New America, where I analyzed the Measurement Lab data to document the broadband speed of publicly owned fiber in the United States. The constant work with federal databases for tech policy implications allowed me to become a grantee of the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University during the same period.

In December 2018, I graduated from Columbia Journalism School's Lede 24 Program with knowledge in Tableau Software, R, JavaScript (mainly D3), basic algorithms, Python, Pandas, QGIS, and SQL. Right after graduation, I worked as a Field Researcher for the Institute of Social Research of the University of Michigan, and as a correspondent for the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día.

In 2017, I covered the aftermath of Hurricane Maria for Univision Noticias and was data reporter for the news site La Isla Oeste.

I received the Overseas Press Club award for Excellence in Journalism in August 2017 for my work in La Perla del Sur.

I hold a BA in Political Science, Modern Languages, and Gender, from the University of Puerto Rico. My MA and postgraduate certifications are in Data Science, Journalism, and Data Governance. In 2016, I was part of the Digital Methods Initiative of the University of Amsterdam.

Some code of my work can be found in GitHub as ella24.

    My thoughts:
    1. Raw data talks about human beings, and my main goal is to continue being an interpreter for world citizens.

    2. Spanish is my native language. Also, English, Portuguese, and Italian are part of me.

    3. My abuela's “domplines” are the best.

    4. I am the mother of three wonderful children (dragons).

Female labor force participation - World Bank Gender Data Portal

Across the globe, women face inferior income opportunities compared to men. Women are less likely to participate in the labor market, and when they do, they are paid less, earn lower profits. They are less likely to work in formal employment. And women also have fewer opportunities for business expansion or career progression. Emerging evidence from new household survey data is suggesting that these gender gaps will be exacerbated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here we look at the global pattern

The Social and Educational Consequences of Adolescent Childbearing - World Bank Gender Data Portal

Adolescent pregnancy and childbearing are a global concern. It has significant consequences on adolescent girls, their children, and society. Teenage mothers face higher health risks than adult mothers ages 20-24: complications from pregnancy and childbirth, baby’s low birthweight and severe neonatal conditions. Socio-economic consequences of early childbearing are also serious. Teenage mothers can lose education opportunities and have reduced lifetime earnings. Adolescent pregnancy can also aff

When police patrol protests in military gear, journalists face a hostile reporting environment

When St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer David Carson was covering protests against police violence in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014, he said other reporters often asked him what it was like to get teargassed night after night. These days, he told CPJ, he rarely gets asked that question: “Now all of my journalist friends have been teargassed.”

Map: Attacks on press freedom during the COVID-19 pandemic

CPJ has documented numerous press freedom violations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, from legislation threatening to censor free speech to arrests of journalists providing the public with vital news about the virus. This map plots violations, verified by CPJ staff, across nearly every region of the world from early February through August 26, 2020.

En el limbo escuelas cedidas a la Alcaldía de Ponce

Summary: Under the guise of tackling the economic crisis in Puerto Rico, the Department of Education started to close schools in 2010. Ten of these schools were in Ponce, the municipality that requested the Government of Puerto Rico permission to be in changer of the edifices and turn them into profitable businesses. However, the buildings were left to rot in disuse. I proved this by perusing hundreds of documents from the Department of Public Affairs, resolutions from the Municipal Legislature, directives from the mayor’s office and visiting the structures and documenting their condition.
